When adjusting your bikes controls this should facilitate standing up without compromising sitting down.
Handle bar setup
The base setting is for the upward taper of the bar to be about parallel with the forks.The result is the actual grips are still basically level but the bar is a little forward and up. In this position you will be putting slightly more weight on the front wheel which helps the front wheel track the uneven surface.
Both should be slightly down. It's a compromise between standing and sitting - personal preference.
Tip: Do not over tighten levers. Allow a little movement so that in the event of a fall the lever/s will rotate on the handlebar rather than break.
Position about 1 to 1 1/2 inches from foot peg top. This is to keep your toe from going too low when up shifting and getting caught by a hard object and pulled under the peg - not pleasant. This will make you raise your foot slightly to downshift.
Set level with the foot peg with little play before engagement, again to protect your foot. Do not put it higher than the footpeg otherwise you may ride it and thus heat up and lose the rear brake.
The above settings may not be suitable for everyone and should be used as a guide only. The most important thing is that you adjust the position of your controls to suit yourself and your style of riding. Making sure these alterations allow ease of use and are comfortable.
Setting Bike Controls
One of the most important things to consider and check is that your bikes controls are setup correctly. Doing this before a long day in the saddle can make all the difference. Turning an average ride out into an excellent days trail riding.
If your bars / levers etc are not set for your own personal use, then operating your bike in difficult conditions may be more demanding and arduous than it should be.
The majority of riding is done standing up which allows the bike to track over rough ground and obstacles. This allows the rider to adjust body position and alter weight distribution when necessary.
